Kuwait has taken a big step toward making its roads safer for everyone. As of April 22, new and much stricter traffic laws are now in place, aimed at reducing accidents and saving lives. The Ministry of Interior introduced these changes in response to a concerning rise in traffic violations and road fatalities over the past few years.
Here’s what drivers need to know:
Speeding by more than 50 km/h over the limit? That could now lead to arrest on the spot. Running a red light will cost you KD 150, and using a mobile phone while driving could result in a KD 75 fine, up from just KD 5. Not wearing a seatbelt? That’s another KD 30 out of your pocket.
But the biggest focus is on impaired driving—and the penalties are serious:
-
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs? You could face a fine of up to KD 3,000 and up to 2 years in jail.
-
If your impaired driving damages property, that rises to KD 3,000 and 3 years in jail.
-
If it causes injury or death, the punishment could reach KD 5,000 in fines and 5 years in prison.
These offenses will be directly referred to the courts and cannot be settled with fines alone.
To support these efforts, the Ministry is running an extensive awareness campaign across TV, newspapers, and social media to ensure every driver understands the rules and the risks.
The message is clear: Drive responsibly. Follow the law. Protect lives.
These new regulations aren’t just about penalties—they’re about making Kuwait’s roads safer for everyone.
