Diplomacy in focus as UAE mediates eighth Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange

Russia and Ukraine conducted a major prisoner exchange on Saturday, each releasing 103 captives in a deal mediated by the UAE. This brings the total number of prisoners exchanged through Emirati diplomatic efforts to 1,994. Ukrainian President Zelensky celebrated the release of 82 soldiers and 21 officers, attributing it to recent military actions in Russia. Russia, in turn, highlighted that its soldiers were captured in the Kursk region. This marks the third exchange since Ukraine's cross-border incursion into Kursk last month.

The UAE has played a crucial role in mediating these exchanges, with the latest being the eighth since 2024 began. Ukrainian officials confirmed that 3,672 Ukrainians have returned home through 57 exchanges, including over 600 Russians captured during the Kursk incursion. The UAE’s Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to both nations for their cooperation, emphasizing the trust placed in its diplomatic efforts. The success of these mediations underscores the UAE’s strong relations with both countries and its dedication to supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In addition to mediation, the UAE has demonstrated humanitarian support, dispatching 50 tonnes of food supplies to Ukraine during Ramadan and providing $100 million in aid. This initiative highlights the UAE’s commitment to aiding those in need during crises, with its efforts extending globally, including in Gaza, Sudan, Brazil, Pakistan, Turkey, and Syria. The UAE's focus on dialogue, de-escalation, and humanitarian assistance remains central to its diplomatic approach.
