UAE mediation efforts facilitate sixth Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange

The Russia-Ukraine crisis erupted on February 24, 2022, when numerous Russian troops marched into Ukraine. Since the beginning of 2024, the UAE has facilitated six prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine.

The most recent exchange, which took place on July 17, saw the release of 190 soldiers. This successful negotiation was confirmed by the Emirati foreign ministry. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed on X that 95 members of Ukraine's armed forces, National Guard, and Border Guards had returned home, expressing his gratitude to the UAE for their mediation efforts.

So far in 2024, the UAE has orchestrated six prisoner exchanges, with the first two in January, followed by one each in February, May, June, and the latest in July. This brings the total number of prisoners exchanged through UAE mediation to 1,558. The UAE ministry expressed appreciation to the governments of Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation, highlighting the Emirates' commitment to being a reliable mediator supporting diplomacy.

The UAE remains dedicated to pursuing a peaceful resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and de-escalation to resolve the crisis and mitigate its humanitarian impact. The Gulf state's mediation efforts also include facilitating a prisoner exchange between Russia and the US in December 2022.

In January 2024, one of the largest exchanges took place with 400 prisoners exchanged between Russia and Ukraine, facilitated by UAE mediation. The six exchanges this year reflect the UAE's status as a trusted international partner.

Here is the timeline of the exchanges:
- First exchange in January (the largest so far)
- Second exchange in January
- Third exchange in February
- Fourth exchange in May
- Fifth exchange in June
- Sixth exchange in July

Three Houses, One Vision – How the UAE’s Abrahamic Family House is Redefining Inter-Faith Dialogue

When you step onto the stone-plinth of the Abrahamic Family House on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, you are not just visiting a building. You are entering a bold statement: a mosque, a church and a synagogue standing side-by-side, equal in size and purpose, sharing common ground while respecting their separate faiths. A landmark of coexistence In early 2023 the UAE inaugurated this pioneering complex, inviting worshippers and visitors alike. The architecture — designed to give each of the three faith-homes the same external dimensions and to signal equality — allows each to express its own traditions while remaining visibly part of a unified vision. More than 200 nationalities live in the UAE, which means the project reflects a multicultural reality in which multiple faiths and identities coexist daily. Islam’s role in the vision For Muslim-majority audiences in the Gulf, the Abrahamic Family House sends a resonant message: Islam does not fear dialogue — it embraces it. The m...

The World's New Safe Harbour? Why Global Capital is Flowing to the UAE's Shores

As storm clouds gather over the global economy, investors are searching for a safe harbour. Their compasses, increasingly, are pointing towards the Arabian Gulf. The International Monetary Fund’s recent endorsement of the UAE—projecting a rise to 4.8% GDP growth in 2025—is a powerful signal that this nation has transcended its regional role to become a global player of immense strategic importance. This isn't just growth; it's a geopolitical realignment, positioning the UAE as a stable, connected, and opportunistic hub in a fractured world. For European partners, the UAE’s appeal is multifaceted. Its rapid ascent as a regulated hub for virtual assets and fintech provides a perfect bridge for European digital finance initiatives seeking a forward-looking testing ground. Simultaneously, the UAE’s ambitious climate agenda, crystallized in its pioneering Climate Law and legacy of hosting COP28, creates a powerful synergy with the European Green Deal and the continent's massiv...
