Yemen’s Aden, the southern city serving as Yemen’s temporary capital and government hub, has been struggling with deteriorating public services, particularly in electricity provision. However, Yemen’s government officials announced the beginning of a trial operation of the country’s inaugural solar power generation station, supported by the UAE, aimed at ending persistent power outages.

The initiative involved generating around 20%-30% of the station’s total power capacity set at 120 megawatts. The initial phase of the initiative, estimated to cost around $100 million, is supported by the UAE. The station is currently set at 120 megawatts, with plans for expansion in the second phase to reach 600 megawatts over the coming years. The UAE has been making headlines globally for its deepening focus on climate action, with the UAE Consensus reaching at the COP28 Summit in December 2023 highlighting the need for humans to transition away from fossil fuels.
Yemen’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Mohamed Al Ashwwal, affirmed the UAE’s significant role in enhancing global trade, stating that the convening of the 13th Ministerial Conference in the GCC nation is clear evidence of the country’s progress in becoming a regional and international player in global trade and a hub for commercial activity.
