Russia and Ukraine have exchanged around 400 prisoners of war in a second major swap last month. Russia’s military reported receiving 195 soldiers, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported 207 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians returning.

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the successful exchange, highlighting the UAE’s global status as a trusted partner on the international stage. The UAE expressed its appreciation to the governments of the two countries for their cooperation and response to UAE mediation. The UAE also affirmed its commitment to continuing efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the raging conflict in Ukraine, which is approaching its second anniversary on February 24.
The UAE has consistently called for diplomacy, dialogue, and de-escalation, and its efforts to support initiatives aimed at mitigating the humanitarian repercussions of the crisis. The UAE’s mediation in December 2022 led to the release and exchange of two prisoners between the US and Russia.
The Russian Defence Ministry noted that the released military personnel will be transported to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation, offering medical and psychological assistance. Ukraine’s President Zelensky expressed gratitude for the UAE’s role in mediating negotiations.
