Neom, a futuristic mega-city in Saudi Arabia, is set to feature a range of food security projects, including desert agriculture and “farm-to-fork” sustainability, to redefine food production, distribution, and consumption through sustainable solutions. The initiative brings in chefs Norbert Niederkofler and Paolo Ferretti, founders of sustainable food venture Neom Care, and Topian, a sustainable agriculture specialist company.
Neom aims to become a hub for food culture and reduce emissions from the food industry, which heavily relies on imports. Topian, a new food company launched by Neom, focuses on agriculture, alternative meat, and dairy.
Neom believes desert agriculture technology will be a global focus due to climate change, and the company aims to address key challenges such as climate change-resistant agriculture, regenerative aquaculture, and customized nutrition. Neom’s CEO, Carlos Motamayor, believes that localization of food production is crucial for boosting food security in the country.
