In a statement to the International Court or World Court on the legitimacy of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian lands, the United Kingdom has been accused of "seeking to block the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from addressing important international humanitarian law matters."
As part of the ICJ's fact-finding stage prior to an anticipated advisory judgment from the court on the legal repercussions of the "occupation" of Palestinian land, the UK in July submitted a 43-page legal opinion about the matter.
The UK reportedly opposed the hearing of the case in the ICJ. Palestinian diplomats reportedly condemned the UK’s statement. They said that the situation was rapidly deteriorating.
However, Israel and the Palestinians view the legal action by the United Kingdom as crucial. Despite the fact that numerous United Nations agencies have determined that some aspects of the occupation are unconstitutional, there has yet to be a ruling on whether the occupation is unlawful.
Last year, a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution requested an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, also called the World Court, which is one of the main principal organs of the United Nations, about the practices of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The last round of negotiations for a two-state solution to the matter failed in 2014. Talks aimed at ending Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories ended in failure in 2014. Since then, construction of Israeli infrastructure and settlements has increased rapidly in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
In 2021, the International Criminal Court, an international tribunal seated in The Hague, began an official investigation into allegations of war crimes committed by both Israeli military personnel and Palestinian armed organizations.
According to the United Nations Middle East envoy, over 200 Palestinians and nearly 30 Israelis have been killed so far this year in the West Bank and Israel because of the conflict.
