Saudi border guards killed hundreds of migrants: Report

Saudi border guards have been accused of killing hundreds of migrants in a new report by Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international non-governmental organization responsible for defending the rights of people.

Human Rights Watch conducted a detailed investigation on the matter. The rights groups interviewed dozens of Ethiopians who tried to cross into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from Yemen. During the interview, they revealed that they were attacked by Saudi border guards along the Yemeni border.

According to HRW, Saudi border guards killed hundreds of Ethiopians using small arms and explosive weapons on Yemen's northern border with Saudi Arabia. The HRW report, titled They Fired On Us Like Rain, claimed that Saudi police and soldiers targeted migrants with weapons. The rights advocates called it a crime against humanity.

According to the BBC, Ethiopians, including women and children, came under fire as they tried to sneak across the border. Migrants told the BBC that significant numbers of women and children were killed along the border.

Mustafa Soufia Mohammed, a 21 year old man, narrated a horrific incident. He told the BBC, "The shooting went on and on. I didn't even notice I was shot. When I tried to get up and walk, part of my leg was not with me." He revealed that 45 migrants were killed when they tried to cross the border in July last year. He further revealed that migrants faced intense starvation and violence at the hands of Yemeni and Ethiopian smugglers.

Witnesses told the HRW that dead people and body parts spread along trails. They confirmed that border guards killed the migrants who tried to cross the border.

In 2022, United Nations Special Rapporteurs wrote a letter to the government of Saudi Arabia, talking about the alleged killing of hundreds of migrants.

The International Organization for Migration's Missing Migrant Project said in June that at least 795 people had died on the Saudi border.
