Prime Minister Fumio Kishida Embarks on Historic Middle East Tour to Strengthen Ties and Energy Cooperation



In a significant development, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has embarked on a tour of the Middle East, following in the footsteps of his late predecessor, Shinzo Abe. Kishida's visit marks the first by a Japanese leader to the region since Abe's 2020 trip. 


The multi-nation tour includes stops in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, with the aim of enhancing Japan's relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and fostering cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. With over 80% of Japan's crude oil imports coming from these countries, energy security is a key focus. Kishida is expected to call for increased production and stability in the oil market. Additionally, he will emphasize Japan's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 and seek collaboration on transitioning to hydrogen power.


The tour also presents investment opportunities for Japanese companies, as Kishida will be accompanied by a delegation of Japanese businesspeople. Discussions on bilateral relations and other regional issues will take place during meetings with counterparts in the Middle East.


The trip holds significance for European leaders as well, who will closely monitor Kishida's tour as they consider their own energy security prospects and green transition options. The visit comes after Kishida's attendance at a NATO summit in Lithuania, where he engaged in discussions with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol regarding Japan's plans to release treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima power plant.


Overall, Prime Minister Kishida's Middle East tour represents an important step towards strengthening diplomatic ties, enhancing energy cooperation, and promoting Japan's green transition agenda.
